Technology and the Future of Privacy

This symposium will examine the effect of new technology on privacy in the current legal climate, how well current law protects societal expectations of privacy, and explore the future of privacy protections under law. Recent developments in technology that permits both government and private entities to conduct location tracking, obtain information from cell phones, conduct surveillance from drones and aggregate masses of information about an individual, pose significant issues for privacy under the existing legal framework.

Topics include:

Current legal issues concerning privacy under the Fourth Amendment and other law.

Location tracking – what it is, how it is done by private industry and the government, and how it matters to societal and legal notions of privacy.

How information stored on cell phones is addressed in the current legal framework.

Drone technology – its domestic uses and the effect on privacy.

The Future of Privacy – an examination of emerging technologies and developing law.
